Dean hasn't yet recorded this tune but includes it regularly in his public performances. It very quickly became a crowd favorite, dedicated, of course, to Meals on Wheels.
This recording of Five Pounds of Possum was taken at The Bean Cup in Indianapolis in 2009. Doug Lofton (bass) and Patchwork join in.
I first encountered this song when I was living in Blue Ridge, Georgia. I travelled around to play at various festivals in the north Georgia mountains, and one Saturday afternoon was included in a line up at an orchard north of Ellijay.
I finished my set and stayed to hear the bluegrass trio that was on after me. They played good music with tight vocal harmony, but when they launched into Five Pounds of Possum, I about fell out. I never ran across that group again, but the song stayed with me.
Through the magic of Google, I found out that the song is more or less a Bluegrass standard and was able to pick up some lyrics. The origins of the song are still unclear, but it's always a popular song wherever I play it.
